Tartu University Hospital Children’s Foundation supports dental implant surgery for children affected by oligodontia and children who have lost permanent teeth due to trauma. Oligodontia is a rare genetic disorder where six or more permanent teeth are missing, therefore the child will not grow permanent teeth after losing their primary teeth. Missing that many teeth not only affects the person’s appearance but also causes functional issues, because the existing teeth and joints of the lower jaw are under excessive stress.

Dental implant surgery is the best long-term treatment for the disorder, as dental implants replace the roots of the teeth without damaging other teeth and remove excessive stress from the jaw. Dental implant surgery is very expensive and is not covered by the Estonian Health Insurance Fund, as the treatment is not included in the list of healthcare services covered by the Health Insurance Fund.

The Children’s Foundation is currently supporting one child with dental implant surgery: Gemin and 2023 two children, Anni and Kirill.
